WASHINGTON, June 25 (DC Times Online) — Visitors to the Lincoln Memorial can now plan a new stop on the National Mall: the monument’s long-hidden undercroft opens to the public June 25 as a timed-entry attraction with free reservations, the National Park Service said.
The Park Service describes the space as a 15,000-square-foot exhibit area beneath the memorial, hidden since the building opened in 1922. The new displays will use interactive exhibits and multimedia presentations to explain the memorial’s construction and its place in American history and civil rights.
Tickets are free but include a $1 service fee for advance reservations made through Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777, according to the Park Service. Same-day tickets will be distributed starting at 8:45 a.m. at the Korean War Veterans Memorial kiosk on Daniel Chester French Drive, just south of the Lincoln Memorial.
The Park Service said the project is funded in partnership with the National Park Foundation. It also said floor-to-ceiling glass will let visitors see the undercroft’s structural foundation.
