BENTONVILLE, Ark., July 7 (DC Times Online) — Walmart Inc. (NYSE: WMT) is cutting prices on thousands of summer items across the United States, a move that puts cheaper food and household basics in front of shoppers while also giving President Donald Trump a fresh opening to claim political credit. The discounts matter because they hit the products families notice most right now: barbecue food, drinks, paper goods, toys, apparel and other weekly staples.

In a statement, Walmart said the price cuts are meant to help customers save money for backyard barbecues, vacations and routine grocery trips. The company highlighted fresh sweet corn on the cob, cut from $0.68 to $0.25 each, fresh red cherries, cut from $11.18 to $5.63, and one pound of 73% ground beef roll, cut from $6.74 to $5.94. That beef price change works out to a little more than 12%, even though Trump said the reduction would be “almost 15%” in a Truth Social post.

Trump said Walmart was lowering prices “at my Administration’s request” to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday. Walmart did not confirm that explanation in its statement, instead describing the markdowns as seasonal savings. That split matters because it shows the same announcement being used two ways: by Walmart as a value message to shoppers, and by Trump as evidence that his administration can influence a major retailer’s pricing.

Sam’s Club, Walmart’s warehouse chain, said it is lowering prices on more than 250 items. Reuters reported that included Member’s Mark 88/12 ground beef at $5.97 a pound, down from $6.17, while Fox Business reported other Sam’s Club examples such as bone-in chicken wings at $2.00 a pound from $2.88 and beef hot dogs at $10.86 from $12.96. Walmart also pointed to lower prices on branded grocery items, including Coca-Cola and PepsiCo products, plus Great Value ice cream, Lay’s Classic potato chips, Frito-Lay Family Fun Variety Packs and disposable paper plates.

For shoppers, the cuts are most immediate in the grocery aisle, where small changes on high-traffic products can add up over a season of cookouts and holiday gatherings. For Walmart, the announcement reinforces its long-running strategy of competing on price and volume, while Sam’s Club is using bulk items to appeal to members stocking up for bigger gatherings. For investors and communities tied to the retailer’s store traffic, the key question is whether the discounts bring more customers through the doors without a clear signal yet on how much profit the company is giving up to do it.
